About the KRI (Kurdistan Region of Iraq)

Why are you called the Kurdistan Women’s Global Alliance, and not the Iraq Women’s Global Alliance?

We operate within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). While the KRI belongs to the Central Government of Iraq, the KRI is semi-autonomous and has a proud history of being a place where people of many religions, ethnicities, and minorities have sought refuge from violence and oppression. Indeed, the KRI is not without its problems, but we are proud to call the KRI home and to continue the legacy of service.

Since “Kurdistan” is not a formal country, where is it exactly?

The region known as “Kurdistan” is primarily composed of land and people in northern Iraq, northeast Syria, southeast Turkey, and northwest Iran. This division came as a result of how the former Ottoman Empire was divided after WWI in the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916 between the British and French.

What do you do and why do you do it?

We are passionate defenders of human rights - and women’s rights are human rights. While much progress is being made in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to combat violence against and marginalization of women, thousands of women and girls remain vulnerable to these acts. We provide mentorship networks, leadership and job skill training, and emergency assistance to vulnerable women in an effort to empower them and create change from within. We also offer community-based education classes to help move communities and families toward peace and to reject violence not only within the home, but in any form. We exist to empower women and families, and to enhance greater micro level peacebuilding.
